When to Seek Urgent Dental Care

Dental problems don’t always happen at convenient times, and sometimes waiting for your next regular appointment isn’t an option. Knowing when to seek urgent dental care can save you from pain, prevent complications, and even save a tooth. Here’s what you need to know about the most common dental emergencies and when to get immediate help.

Severe Tooth Pain

Mild tooth sensitivity or discomfort may be manageable until your next checkup, but severe or persistent tooth pain should never be ignored. Intense pain could signal an infection, deep cavity, or abscess that requires prompt treatment. Left untreated, an abscess can spread to other parts of the body and become dangerous.

Knocked-Out Tooth

If a permanent tooth is completely knocked out, time is critical — you have the best chance of saving the tooth if you see a dentist within 30 to 60 minutes. Handle the tooth by the crown (the white part), gently rinse it with water if dirty, and try to place it back in its socket. If that isn’t possible, store it in milk or a tooth preservation solution and get to a dentist right away.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

A broken or chipped tooth can cause pain, expose the inner layers of the tooth, and increase the risk of infection. Small chips can sometimes wait a few days, but larger fractures, especially those that cause pain or bleeding, should be treated as soon as possible.

Lost Filling or Crown

If a filling or crown falls out, it leaves your tooth vulnerable to decay and damage. While this may not always require immediate treatment, you should contact your dentist as soon as you can to prevent further complications.

Facial Swelling or Abscess

Swelling in your face, gums, or jaw can indicate a serious infection. If you have swelling combined with pain, fever, or difficulty breathing or swallowing, seek urgent dental or medical care immediately.

Uncontrolled Bleeding

Bleeding that won’t stop after a tooth extraction or injury should be treated as an emergency. Continuous bleeding can be dangerous and requires professional attention.

Objects Stuck Between Teeth

If something is lodged between your teeth and flossing won’t remove it, see a dentist. Forcing it out with sharp objects can damage your gums or enamel.

Not every dental issue is an emergency but recognizing when to seek urgent care can prevent pain, preserve your teeth, and protect your overall health. If you’re unsure whether your situation is an emergency, call your dentist — they can advise you on whether you need immediate treatment or can schedule a regular appointment.
